Whistler is a paradise for families, especially during the summer months when the mountains around feel like a giant outdoor playground. We just got back from a 10 day trip to Whistler with our 5 kids and it was better than we could have imagined.  Our kids even said that our trip to Whistler was better than Disneyland.  If you’re planning a trip to Whistler with your kids, here’s a list of the top things you won’t want to miss!

1. Playing at Lost Lake

Lost Lake quickly became one of our go-to spots. It’s a fantastic place to relax and enjoy nature while the kids have a blast. It’s not far out of town, so it’s easy to access, but it’s far enough away that you feel like you’re out in the forest.  The beach is perfect to play on, and the water was perfect for a swim on a hot day (much warmer than I expected for Canadian water).  If your kids are into paddleboarding or kayaking, you can bring your own boat and you’ll have most of the lake to yourself.  Best of all, the lake is surrounded by TONS of trails that are perfect for a short walk, or introducing your kids to mountain biking.  We spent several days there and it was the perfect way to spend a relaxing day in Whistler with kids.

2. Go Mountain Biking

Whistler is famous for its mountain biking, and trust me, there is something for everyone. We spent a good chunk of our time in Whistler biking and no one ever got bored.  Lost Lake is our top suggestion for introducing your kids to trail riding, with lots of different options to help improve their skills. If you have kids who are advanced beginners or higher, then head over to the Whistler Mountain Bike Park for some downhill riding.  We put our kids in lesson there with the DFX Bike School and it was absolutely amazing.  I was shocked at how much my kids learned in a short period of time.  Worth every penny.  For more details about biking with kids in Whistler, check out our article on the best beginner bike trails in Whistler and Biking the Whistler Mountain Bike Park with Kids.

3. Hike to the Train Wreck

One of the coolest hikes we did was to the Whistler Train Wreck. It’s an easy, family-friendly hike that leads you to a series of old train cars that are now covered in colorful graffiti. The kids absolutely loved it and had so much fun exploring all of the train cars, and even climbing on top of several of them.  We stayed at the boxcars for a full hour because the kids were having so much fun.

The hike is also pretty amazing, with lush forests all along the way.  Right before you get to the train wreck, you’ll cross a suspension bridge over the beautiful Cheakamus River.  This is one little adventure that you won’t want to miss.  thought it was like a real-life treasure hunt, finding each car tucked away in the forest. The hike also includes a suspension bridge over the, which adds a bit of adventure to the experience. It’s a short hike, so it’s perfect for younger kids, and the train wreck itself is a fascinating piece of Whistler’s history.

4. Indulge Your Sweet Tooth

No trip with kids is complete without a treat (or two), and Whistler has you covered. We discovered a couple of spots in the village that were a huge hit with our kids. The first is The Great Glass Elevator Candy Shop, which is like a dream come true for any candy lover. They have everything from old-school candies to the latest sweet trends, though approach with caution as the bulk prices were pretty expensive. The second spot we loved was COWS Ice Cream. This place is famous for its rich, creamy ice cream, and the fun cow-themed flavors were a big hit with the kids. We stopped here several times and it was a fun treat for everyone (and pretty affordable cones as well).  If you’re near the gondola, check out Lift Coffee and grab one of their cookie ice cream sandwiches.  My kids became so obsessed with them and were constantly begging for one after our long biking days.

5. Visit the Skate Park

Whistler has one of the largest outdoor skate parks in Canada, and it’s a must-visit if your kids are into skateboarding, scootering, or BMX. The park is well-designed with areas for all skill levels, so whether your kids are beginners or more experienced, they’ll find something fun to do. My kids loved trying out the different ramps and obstacles, and it was a great way for them to burn off some energy.
Note:  If your kids just want to bike, the bike skills park and pump track are right next to the skate park, so have them bike there instead of congesting the skate park during busy times.

6. Catch an Event at the Olympic Plaza

The Olympic Plaza in Whistler Village is a hub of activity, especially in the summer. There are often evening concerts and movies and many of them are really family friendly.  We actually got to watch the Olympics being streamed from here which was a really fun place to be.

It’s a great place to relax on the lawn, enjoy a picnic, and take in some entertainment. The kids loved that there is a playground at the back of the plaza, which was a lifesaver when they had a little extra energy at the end of the day.

7. Ride Bikes at the Pump Track or Free Skills Park

For kids who love biking, the pump track and free skills park are absolute musts. Located at the base of Blackcomb Mountain just past parking lot #3  these parks are designed for all levels of riders. The pump track is great for younger kids or beginners, where they can practice their balance and control on a series of rollers and berms. The skills park has features like small jumps, drops, and wooden bridges that are perfect for more advanced riders. My kids spent hours here, and the best part is, it’s free!  You’ll find these biking areas, right next to the skate park.

8. Go Whitewater Rafting

For a family adventure that’s both exciting and a great way to cool off, try whitewater rafting. The Green River is a great introduction to whitewater rafting.  The rapids are exciting enough to get your heart pumping, but not so intense that they’re really dangerous. Sadly, the weather took a turn for the worse and we didn’t get to go on a river trip, but it’s slated for our next trip.  Kids must be 10-years-old and weigh 90 lbs to participate.

9. Explore the Aerial Obstacle Course

This is an activity that we didn’t learn about until the end of our trip to Whistler and we weren’t able to get a reservation, but our friends told us great things.  The Aerial Obstacle Course at Whistler offers a unique challenge for adventurous kids and adults alike and we loved that there are areas just for kids and other for adults and teens.  While you’re there you’ll get to navigate through the treetops, tackling obstacles like swinging logs, rope bridges, and zip lines. The course is designed to be both challenging and safe, with harnesses and safety lines throughout and the pictures and video made it look so amazing! It sounds like a great way to test limits and have some fun as a family.
