“Call of the Wild” by Jack London – Another great Jack London book. This one is about a dog that is stolen from his home in California to become a sled dog for the gold rush.

“Wonder” by R.J. Palacio – Auggie was born with a facial difference and until 5th grade was homeschooled. Now he must figure out how to survive at school while being so different.

“The Book Thief” by Markus Zusak – A foster girl steals books to survive the war. She learns to read and shares her books with neighbors.

Top Adult Reads for a Snowy Evening

“The Nightingale” by Kristin Hannah – Such a great book. This book follows two sisters as they try to survive the war in their own way.

“Boys in the Boat” by Daniel James Brown– This book is a must-read. Not necessarily a winter book but the movie is coming out on Christmas Day. It is one of my favorite books I have read lately. It follows the University of Washington rowing team trying to compete at the 1936 Olympics.

“The Frozen River” by Ariel Lawhorn – Written by a New York Times bestselling author. The Frozen River is a historical mystery inspired by the life and diary of Martha Ballard.

“Educated” by Tara Westover – A memoir about a girl that is not allowed to go to school who eventually gets a PhD from Cambridge.

“Winter Garden” by Kristin Hannah – A tale of family secrets and reconciliation, spanning from World War II to modern times.

“All the Light We Cannot See” by Anthony Doerr – This is such a great book that is now a Netlix series. It is about a French girl who goes blind and a German orphan boy whose paths cross in occupied France as they both try to survive World War II.

“When Breath Becomes Air” by Paul Kalanithi – A memoir of a neurosurgeon who is about to complete a decade’s worth of training when he is diagnosed with stage IV cancer. Such a great book about mortality.

“Glass Castle” by Jeannette Walls – Another memoir of Jeannette and her dysfunctional family. Her father is a drunk and her mother doesn’t care to be a mom. The kids raise themselves until they all make their way to New York.

A Man Called Oveby Fredrik BackmanFollows the life of Ove, who is a cranky neighbor. His life is changed when new neighbors move in.
